Be Anxious for Nothing

Philippians 4:6–7

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

In these verses, we find both a command and a promise. The command is clear: “Do not be anxious about anything.” The promise is equally clear: we will receive the peace of God.

How are these two connected? How can anxious hearts become peaceful hearts? The answer is found in Christ Jesus.

Paul tells us that through prayer, supplication, and thanksgiving, we are to make our requests known to God. Prayer and thanksgiving are concepts that most of us understand, but what is supplication?

Supplication is the humble, earnest, and sincere act of asking God for help. It is approaching Him with a posture of dependence, recognizing our need and His sufficiency. This reveals an important principle that the Lord Jesus continually taught: we must come before God humbly.

Humility is not thinking less of ourselves; it is thinking rightly about ourselves and rightly about God. It is recognizing who we are and, more importantly, who He is. Humility does not lead us to self-condemnation—it leads us to glorify Him. That is easy to say, but often difficult to practice.

Yet God gives a wonderful promise to those who come before Him in this way. He promises us peace. Not merely temporary relief or improved circumstances, but the peace of God—a peace that surpasses all understanding.

What a remarkable promise! God offers something greater than our ability to comprehend. Even when circumstances remain difficult, His peace guards our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. We can rest confidently in this promise because God always does what He says He will do.

May we grow in faith today, bringing every concern, burden, and anxiety before our gracious Lord.

Let’s Pray

Lord, help us and increase our faith. Teach us how to humbly lay everything before You and make our requests known to You. Show us what it means to trust You completely and to rest in Your goodness.

Lord, You have promised us Your peace. We ask that You would guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus and help us to walk confidently in that promise.

Thank You for Your faithfulness, Your mercy, and Your peace.

Thank You, Jesus.
