But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.
You've probably heard the phrase, "kicking the can down the road". It usually means you put something off for later because you don't want to face it now. Psychologist and author Dr. Jordan Peterson said, “If you have a problem and really think through what the consequences are going to be in three to five years of not facing it, you're going to get more afraid of not facing it than facing it." In other words, kicking the can down the road only builds fear the longer you put things off.
As humans, we give in to this tactic when it comes to dealing with our sin. Instead of obeying what God says, we ignore it. He says to cut sin out of your life…to stop looking at porn, or drinking, or dabbling with drugs or gossiping about others, or resorting to a "little white lie". Why do we continue to ignore living like He told us we should live? If you read the Bible or hear a sermon and sense God's Spirit is urging you to deal with it, but you keep ignoring that voice, you are giving in to fear.
We become emotional cowards when we don't want to confront the wrong we see right before us. That's like building your life on sand. When the storms hit and you are under intense pressure, and the time comes for you to do something noble, or wise, to confront the wrong you are doing or to come through for someone you love, you will have no firm foundation of character because you have repeatedly given into sin and your life will crash, as Jesus describes in this passage.
What's the answer? Obey what the Lord says now…today. Deal with your sinful habits immediately. Get help from someone who cares. Cry out to God for strength to face your fear and the pain it will take to be transparent and to resist the temptation that you know will come from putting it off. He loves you too much to let you stay the way you are and He offers hope of being completely free of the destruction of your sin.
