He Provides

Philippians 4:19

And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.

“If I were the richest man in the world, I would be able to buy anything I want.” That is a modern misguided mode of thinking that assumes all I need can be bought with money. In our material world we tend to measure our needs and desires and mix them up into an elixir that can go to our brain and warp us into thinking that life is about getting all you can.

Certainly our culture feeds this mindset with endless advertising and social comparisons. Singers and costumed dancers assault us through commercials that dupe us into expecting that if we don’t have enough, we can always borrow more money.

When the Apostle Paul wrote this verse, he had already considered these questions because he told us in this passage that he had learned how to be content whether he had wealth or was living in humble conditions. By the way, when he wrote this letter, the current state of his finances were pretty humble, in a prison.

So, this verse does not suggest that we will be frolicking in luxurious living if we do something to get on God’s good side.

You could pull it out of context and assume it says He will give us all those things we have asked for, right?

Wrong.

First, the Bible tells us that God knows what we need and how much…not your biggest “want” but your greatest need. If you truly trust Him, you will learn to let Him decide what you need and let Him supply it…in His timing.

The second part is that the way He will supply your needs is likely by using others. Paul thanked other Christians in the previous verses for sending a gift to him. He was writing this letter to assure them that because they gave sacrificially, God will take care of what they gave up and supply all their needs.

God will do that for you too.

When you are stressed, wondering where your help is going to come from, remember that just as Paul was provided things because the Spirit lead others to give, He will do the same for you.

It might come from an unexpected government check, an employer, relatives who leave finances for you, or through the good benevolence of godly people.

His ways do not limit His means.

We can be sure He will supply what we need because He has unlimited resources and is a loving, gracious Father.

Trust Him and go to your knees in prayer then watch with anticipation and see how He provides.
