Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.
Most of us have heard the story of Pinocchio, the wooden puppet who wanted to become a real boy. You probably saw the Disney animated movie when you were young. The movie version assumes you believe that a wooden puppet can become real and dance around but the analogy is presented to teach that becoming a real man is dependent on your ability to make wise decisions. Pinocchio was lured into running away from home and was swept up by the crooked and the deceivers who persuaded him that the key to happiness was following his feelings and desire for pleasure.
He was lured to Pleasure Island which appeared to be the ultimate source of fun but it was a trap to turn him into a donkey and capture him. In the story he becomes a slave to his desires for pleasure. Looking back on the children's story you may now realize that the part about being turned into a donkey illustrates how you become a fool when you disregard the warnings of those who are wise. The fable offers a meaningful example of the wisdom in this verse.
Our choices will determine our lives. Spending time with those who want to just feed their pleasures or plot how they can increase their wealth without working for it will lead you to a life of being trapped by your own desires, spiraling downward to a place where you are helplessly destroyed.
When you choose to spend time with wise people, especially those who are committed to following the Lord Jesus Christ, you will gain what you could not otherwise receive….you will acquire wisdom. It will rub off on you. You will help and encourage one another and learn more of what God has to say about the decisions of life. You will be motivated to invest yourself in what is on God's mind and heart, the needs of a hurting world.
This verse is really about making choices and today you can start fresh by asking the Holy Spirit to show you which direction you should go and who you should go with.
